At what quantity does it make sense to use a production CNC shop vs. a prototype shop?
Production machining generally becomes more cost-effective than prototype-style machining above 100–500 pieces per order, depending on part complexity and material. Production shops justify dedicated fixturing, tool presetting, and process optimization investments at volumes where the per-piece savings outweigh the setup costs. For ongoing repeat orders (blanket POs, kanban programs), even lower quantities per release can justify a production shop relationship.
What quality systems should a production CNC shop have?
At minimum, a production CNC shop should hold ISO 9001:2015 certification. For aerospace or defense production, AS9100 is required. A robust production shop should also have documented control plans, FMEA for critical features, in-process gauging or CMM inspection, SPC with Cpk tracking for key characteristics, and a corrective action (CAPA) system. Ask to review their PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) capability or AS9102 FAIR process for new part qualification.
How do I evaluate a production CNC shop before placing a long-term contract?
Before awarding a production contract, consider: 1) reviewing their quality certification and scope, 2) requesting a facility tour to assess equipment age, condition, and floor organization, 3) asking for Cpk data on similar parts, 4) checking references from existing OEM customers in your industry, and 5) reviewing their risk management approach for material supply disruptions and capacity constraints. A sample order of 50–200 parts as a qualification run is standard practice before committing to volume production.
